Day 5 September 30, 2020

We survived a cold, windy, and rainy evening waking to clearing skies.  After a leisurely breakfast and a detailed discussion on last night’s debate (unanimity on Trump’s insanity) we headed to Rehoboth Beach, 9 miles to the south, for a lunch of oysters, soft shell crabs, & lobster.

We’re eating way too much, but this may have been our best meal so far.  SOFTSHELL CRABS!  SOFTSHELL CRABS!  SOFTSHELL CRABS!

We had oysters too…8 different varieties including: PEI, Washington State, Maryland, Penobscot Bay, Duxbury, Delaware, Martha’s Vineyard.  None form Wellfleet or Cotuit. My favorite was from Duxbury!

After lunch, we woke Carl up from his table side nap and drove to the nearby beach and walked along the boardwalk.  It was actually made of wood, and lined with souvenir stores and saltwater taffy shops.  Despite all my summers on the Jersey Shore, this was the first time I actually walked on a boardwalk.

Leaving the boardwalk we headed back to our campground in Lewes with a photo stop at Pizzeria Nicola, Walmart, and a cigar store.

Once back at the campground Joni and I went for a bike ride throughout the park seeing more relics from the WWII base, Fort Miles, a birding observation tower, beautiful dunes, and two different lighthouses.

For dinner we broke from our seafood menu and dined on delicious take out BBQ:  brisket, pulled pork, creamed corn, baked bean, corn bread, and collared greens.  We closed the evening with our first campfire of this trip.
