Days 7 & 8, October 2-3, 2020

Day 7, October 2, 2020

A travel day for us as we left Cape Henlopen in Delaware and headed south to the Pocomoke River State Park on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Before leaving Henlopen we had a leisurely breakfast, a scramble of bacon & eggs, and our leftovers from last night’s Mexican dinner which included pulled pork, beans, and garlic corn.

We took a slight detour in order to go to the closest Best Buy in order to purchase a USB-C to SD card cable for my laptop.  I forgot to pack mine, and without it I can’t transfer photos from my camera to my laptop.

Lunch was at the Market Street Inn in Salisbury.  Our table overlooked the Wicomico River.  A lump crab cake sandwich and a black and blue hamburger were our wise choices.

Leaving Salisbury we headed to our campground just outside of Snow Hill, Maryland, a beautiful old town surrounded by Eastern Shore farms.  The campsite were very private and the bathroom/shower facilities were as good as any we’ve experienced camping.

After setting up our campsite we headed out for dinner.  The food was very pleasing, but it was cold so we dined indoors, and the place was way too crowded with many sitting at the bar, talking loudly, and not wearing masks.  No wonder Maryland’s COVID numbers are high!

We closed the evening with another campfire, whose heat was most welcome with the 50° temps.

Day 8, October 3, 2020

Woke up to chilly temps in the 40°’s!  Our down bags kept us warm, but getting up to pee at 4 AM, wasn’t fun. This would have been a good morning to have an auxiliary heater in the van.

Nevertheless after a hot shower in the beautiful bathroom, I was feeling fine.  I made some coffee, and then we headed into Snow Hill for more coffee and sweet rolls.  I’m not sure how you would characterize the architecture of this small town, but it certainly was appealing.

Leaving Snow Hill we headed for the shore and the Assateague Island National Seashore, best know for the wild ponies.  Crossing the Sinepuxent Bay on the Verrazano Bay we were immediately greeted by incredible flock of shore birds,  including multiple egrets.  After a quick browse through the Visitors’ Center, we drove south along the main road of the park, checking out some of the campground sites and taking a ½ walk through a tidal marsh.

We left Carl and Wendy at that point and drove south, 60 mintues, to the town of Chincoteague, Va. where we met old friends Bill and Mila Millman who live in Arlington, Va.  We had a wonderful lunch of local seafoods including: crab soup, clam chowder, raw oysters, and flounder.  We had not seen Bill and Mila for 13 months, so it was a lot of fun to catch up with them, and of course express our concern for our COVID stricken President.

Leaving Bill and Mila, we drove out to the Chincoteague half of the National Seashore where we saw a large group of the grazing wild ponies.  The village of Chincoteague reminded me a lot of the panhandle of Florida and particularly Apalachicola.

The drive back to our campground was quick with a stop at Walmart for some groceries.  Tonight we’re dining at the campground.  Carl is cooking us hamburgers.
